Chapter 12 focused on the big picture of design and a couple of topics that caught my attention. The first thing that stood out was the idea of sequence. I read this part of the chapter and sort of thought this was a point that was already understood. If we are to be flexible with our individual lessons and units, then I would assume that would be the case for the entirety of a course. It is incredibly easy to use a textbook as the guide for sequence, but that is not best for understanding. The analogy of comparing a textbook to a software guide is great. Learning and design should be more similar to an owners manual, where you access the parts of the manual according to interest and need.
To help best with sequencing, the other part that stood out to me was the design of a syllabus. If it is set up based upon essential questions and objectives, then a teacher will maintain the flexibility of sequencing according to students' interests. As I have been reading through the book, I kept wondering why a thorough map for core subjects was not presented. But this chapter did a good job of pointing out how so many different variables are impacting students, there is no set model that is universal. It doesn't make my planning any easier, but I do appreciate the desire to keep things flexible. I think there is great value by incorporating my personality and strengths into essential questions that meet state and district goals.
